This grand sentinel and has overseen the birth and death of this once busy shipbuilding center since 1792 from its hilltop perch. San Blas was first settled in 1767 because the sheltered harbor at the mouth of the river provided a good location for supplying the missions of Baja California and to transport soldiers north by sea to avoid the pugnacious Indians of Sonora.

In 1768 Father Junipero Serra left from San Blas aboard the Purisima Concepcion to take over the work of the expelled Jesuits in Baja California. He would go on to establish the first missions of California. Later San Blas would stage the inflaming battles for the independence and sovereignty for Mexico.
